Press Quotes
"A robust, hard swinger who favors the baritone’s lower register, reflecting some of his influences (Pepper Adams, Cecil Payne, Leo Parker.) – Ira Gitler/Leonard Feather, The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz
"In contrast to the Mulligan school favoring upper register arabesques, Schumacher, like Serge Chaloff, Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams, bubbles from the bottom. Setting off seismic tremors with a rumbling sound reminiscent of the snorting coal-burners that once carried the freight, Schumacher roars and soars." – Chuck Berg, Jazz Times
"...the school that jumps into the pure forcefulness of the bari's remarkable sound...This includes Schumacher, who mines the bari's low strength and exploits the blatant, raspy blaaat that puts an edge on each note..." - Neil Tesser, Critic's Choice - Chicago Reader
"Schumacher has an obvious love for and no small command of bop. He uses his command of the bop vocabulary to shape often heartfelt statements." - David Dupont, Cadence Magazine
"...his intonation and precise phrasing possess the voice-like quality of a cello." - Tom Nuccio, Illinois Entertainer
"Every Corner presents a composite collection of the musical styles, influences, and people that have shaped David Schumacher as both a jazz musician and as a person." - Tom Nuccio, Illinois Entertainer
"…robust baritone sax !" - Jazz Times
"Schumacher moves into the spotlight with his baritone saxophone .... sending out deep and powerful drones into the audience..."

"Connick spotlighted several soloists from his band, most notably baritone saxophonist Dave Schumacher, who brought a rough melancholy to "Petite Fleur," ..." Bill White,

Every Corner Baritone saxophonist David Schumacher assembled a strong rhythm section to back him for this strong recording debut as a leader. There are surprisingly few baritone saxophonists around these days playing straight ahead jazz, making the appeal of this recording all the greater. Every Corner features eight pieces, almost all of which Schumacher either wrote or had a hand in arranging. The music has a decidedly upbeat feel, and even the slower pieces never drag. The opener, "Lucky in the Park," and the closer, "Skleena's Dog," are laced with a Latin feel, adding congas, bongos, and chekere to an already sizzling unit. ... |
From Another Life
For his second recording as a leader, David Schumacher leads several different combinations through a well-paced program of bop-drenched tunes. The baritone saxophonist features two groups, one including saxophonist Steve Wilson and percussionist Steve Berrios, the other with guitarist Russell Malone and drummer Billy Drummond. For one piece — his own "Hip or Critical" — Schumacher stretches successfully over bass and drums alone. As with his debut, the well-paced From Another Life succeeds admirably, with the leader's raunchy, full-toned horn the highlight throughout. Emotionally laden and deliciously unpretentious, the album does not forge much new ground, but its tight, melodic qualities continue to appeal. | |
